Jérôme Royer Energetic explorer Jérôme Royer is a contemporary painter, recognized as an energetic explorer in his artistic approach. Deeply passionate about drawing from an early age, he first turned towards architecture before fully returning to his original vocation, encouraged by what he encountered on social media. Gradually, he developed his artistic practice, moving from regular drawing to a deeper exploration of painting. His work is closely influenced by martial arts, particularly aikido and tai chi chuan, disciplines that nourish his way of approaching gesture and movement. Mastering his brush with precision and fluidity, Jérôme Royer combines finesse and spontaneity, creating works in which the figurative and the abstract respond to one another. His research touches on meditation, quantum physics, multiverses and a new perception of the world, placing humankind at the center of an interconnected universe. His artistic approach is part of a quest for balance between Yin and Yang, translating this philosophy into the vitality and energy of his compositions. Artistic approach My process is intuitive, almost shamanic. I let the paint guide me; I work with its accidents rather than against them. These faces emerging from drips and traces are not portraits in the traditional sense – they are invitations to shared introspection. By allowing the contours to dissolve, I seek to create a space where the viewer must be actively involved in reconstituting the humanity they sense. This dialectic between hardness (the deep darkness) and softness (the warm touches of color) reflects our own internal struggle. I had an uncle who was a painter, and on Wednesdays and weekends, I often spent my time drawing at my grandparents’ while waiting for snack time. At school, I made my classmates laugh by caricaturing the teachers; it was already a way for me to express myself and find my place differently than through words. Later on, I chose art as my option for the baccalauréat and got 13/20, but I failed the other exams and had to retake it the following year. When I asked to take the art option again, I was told that it was no longer possible, because no one had the average grade and they had decided to remove it. When I gave them my grade from the previous year, they told me I was one of the few in France to have achieved that mark. With hindsight, all the signs were there, but at that time, for me, it was not a “real” job, so I turned towards construction and architecture. It took martial arts for something to really open up: the gestures, meditation, the management of emotions and my body gradually led me towards painting, years later. Thanks to Instagram, I started to show what I was doing, to receive feedback, and that gave me the confidence I needed to dare to truly make it my profession. Music has also played a very important role for me. Since I was very young, I have listened to a lot of industrial, metal and gothic music, bands like Nine Inch Nails, Front 242 or Einstürzende Neubauten. I have always found softness and beauty in things that are hard, intense, sometimes dark, and that is exactly what I try to transpose into my paintings. In my work, there is this idea of tension between strength and fragility, between chaos and harmony. As in the music I love, there is noise, energy, but also something sensitive, almost delicate. It is this mixture that moves me and that I seek to bring to life on the canvas. Today, I feel fulfilled: I make the paintings I love, without compromise, I explore new paths, new techniques, and I am always seeking to create, to innovate, and to connect my paintings with human beings.
